January 18, 2022 Minutes

Meeting called to order at 6:30pm by President Jim Jolliffe.

Guests: Ron Holder from Belvidere, Ron Riederich from Tullahoma.

Jim mentioned that Darren Earle’s father passed away on Christmas Eve.

Jim said some positions had not been filled for board at the December meeting. Current members serving agreed to continue serving. The additional positions and continuing Chairs are:

Richard Gulley-News Editor, Chuck Taylor-Membership, Michael Layfield-Publicity.

Motion made by Dave Duesterhaus to accept nominations and seconded by Gary Runyon.  Motion unanimously approved by the membership.

Committee Reports: Gary Runyon reported next meeting Sam Clark will do presentation on tool maintenance for suggestions on future presentations.

Larry Wendland said Turning Bee scheduled June 11^th.  Members also expressed interest in a Carving Bee. The Splinter Carvers will look into setting a date/location.

Matt Brothers informed club that Jack Kincella moving March but would do seminar on finishing scheduled for Saturday February 19^th 9am at Matt’s shop. Details will be sent out.

Gary Runyon let the club know he has stand up drill press from Jim Accord’s estate for sale. Contact him if interested.

SHOW and TELL:

John Hartin started making Scandinavian spoons. He used box elder and showed rough cut using band-saw. Explained making curve using 2” reliever. He said do inside of spoon before finishing outside. Used sanding drum to do turns. He had a finished spoon for display. He finished spoon with penetrating finish he makes.

Chuck Taylor displayed a small hollow vessel which is very thin. Made of holly with gloss lacquer finish. He also had a small portable tic-tac-toe game. Made in two parts held together with magnets. Finish satin lacquer.

Matt Brothers with aid of slides showed a couple projects he worked on for clients. A piano bench of white oak. Finish brown mahogany with a leather top. He had slides of a butterfly dining room table he got stripped. He repaired. Said table well built. Looked great.

Jim Jolliffe showed two carvings of gnomes for friends. A gnome Santa with no eyes, no shoes and added mouth and ponytail. Another is a Santa moon and star made for friend to match one they already have. Used Dremel to help with design. Both made of basswood and initially sealed with boiled linseed oil. Will paint with acrylic paint and spray matte finish.

PROGRAM: MAKING A GRANDMOTHER CLOCK       DAN FARR

Dan with the use of slides went through progress of making clock. He explained making sure things fit. Wood is solid walnut. Dan showed steam box he made to bend wood. Don’t use wafer board. Takes 30-40 minutes in steamer. Never have too many clamps(showed slide of many clamps used). Showed attempts to bend, learned process, steamed twice. Each piece took 3 days. He made 30 part guides as well as router guides. Made of 3/8” press board. Assembly starts from the bottom up. Had to do lots of sanding. Mid-section, great care to center. (Never enough clamps). Neck was hardest to align. Head had to dry fit. Added top-hat just to add height.

Built doors and inserted glass. Finished with Danish Oil with multi layers of shellac and several coats of gloss lacquer. Installed doors, lock, glass, movements, clock face and other hardware. No side access.

Dan showed his finished Grandmother Clock next to his Grandfather clock.
