    June 21, 2022 Meeting

Meeting called to order by President Jim Jolliffe at 6:30pm.

Jim went over of calendar of upcoming meetings and events. Full list is on the club website.

Larry Wendland reported on the turning bee. The bee was very successful and all enjoyed themselves. Eleven blanks left over to be auctioned off at August meeting. Membership thanked Larry and his wife, Sharon, for being great hosts both with the turning and an outstanding lunch!

Carving Bee will be held September 17^th. Sign-up sheet sent around.

Gary Runyon is offering a one-on-one class at his shop for sharping planes and scrapers. Contact Gary by phone or email if interested.

Tullahoma Fine Arts Center has a woodworking exhibit June 4th-25^th. Also have artisans market every 3rd Saturday. Fee $10. or $25. for non-members.  You set up outside on the TFAC grounds. TFAC makes no commission on your sales!

Klingspor is offering 10% off to club members. To get the discount, members need to “opt in” by selecting “yes” and then providing contact information to Klingspor via the club’s records.  A sheet was passed around for those wishing to sign up.

There is a unique opportunity for anyone wishing to refinish antique furniture. Contact Matt Brothers.

SHOW AND TELL:

Gary Runyon had a picture of a Windsor chair a friend has with cracked leg. The friend will give ot away. Contact Gary if interested.

Tony Murphy had 2 contemporary bar stools he made of walnut. He discussed making the bar stools, the joints and seats. One was finished with oil, varnish, and wax. The other is not yet finished.

John Hartin brought a black walnut bowl with carved top and small feet. He had second bowl with larger feet. He said you need to make larger feet so they can be seen. Also displayed a small bowl with lid and a Scandinavian spoon he carved.

Richard Gulley displayed a plaque made in memory of  Avis Holmes to hang on a memorial wall at church. He used ambrosia maple wood and rattle can lacquer for the finish.

Gary Runyon showed a skinner knife with blade made by forging from a bearing. The knife handle was made of stabilized Chittum wood.

PROGRAM:  REALFOOT STYLE DUCK CALLS – FRED ROE

Fred gave a brief background of himself. Retired NASA engineer who spent 50 years in aerospace! He told of his father getting his first duck call and how he got into making calls.  Fred brought a number of calls he has made. He explained making the parts of call: Barrel, Sound chamber, Reed, and Wedge. With the use of slides he walked through the different parts and how he made the calls. He had on display parts and jigs he uses. Fred went through finishing process. Soaked the calls in teak oil for 30 minutes and let dry for 24 hrs. He then applied a final coat of Tru oil gun stock finish. Fred does not finish the insert except for teak oil and final buffing. Stabilized wooden inserts are final sanded and buffed only. Tune the call. Fred answered questions from membership.  He also provided many references and his blog address with more details on the duck call making process.
