Program – Tony Murphy – Building a Bar Stool
Tony Murphy provided a detailed presentation on building a custom bar stool following a Scott Morrison design from Fine Woodworking Magazine. He made the bar stool out of walnut. He covered all aspects of the build starting with the seat, followed by legs, arms and stretchers. The seat steps including milling and cutting parts to initial length, ripping with a 3 degree bevel, and dry clamping to trace the seat pattern. Before glue up, he cut dados for the front legs and notches for the back legs. He marked the seat parts for dowels/biscuits, drilled holes and then glued them. Once dry, he shaped the seat with an angle grinder outfitted with woodcarving discs followed by sanding. He finished the seat joints with a rabbeting bit.
He used templates to trace the leg layout. He made special fixtures to cut seat dados in the legs. Front legs were drilled for dowels. All joints were reinforced with screws, counter-sunk and plugged. Spacers were utilized to keep legs parallel.

He covered construction steps for the arms. He rested the arm on the front leg and established the angle to the rear leg. He then set up the miter gauge and blade angle for perfect alignment. He carefully removed all but ¾ in. of the flat area. He inserted a dowel center in the hole on the front leg, and marked the arm center. He drilled the hole for the dowel. He then traced the arm pattern and cut the arm on the band saw. Once shaped, he glued and screwed the arm to the legs.

He showed how he made the chair front and rear stretchers. Following the presentation, he welcomed members to sit in the completed chair. Thanks to Tony for sharing!
