About The Program

 I am excited to be able to have Mike Zinser who was a member years ago in the club  to do our program for May, as part of the program Mike has extended a invitation to anyone interested, to go see the program he runs the weekend after our meeting. we would have to carpool up but I think it would be of great interest for folks to see his program in action. -- Jack Kincella

Help Needed

Someone to do the publicity for the club. It is a 10 minute job once per month and I find it hard to understand how we cannot have someone to take over this easy job. please see Jack Kincella at the meeting if you would like to help out. BE ACTIVE THE CLUB NEEDS YOU!!

2017 TVW ANNUAL “TOM COWAN MEMORIAL” TURNING BEE ON MAY 20

The Turning Bee is an event in which newer wood turners are paired with a mentor for a “hands-on” experience to get instructions and advice on how to turn a bowl. Everyone get the chance to rough turn a bowl and take your “creation” home with you to dry. This event has spawned the careers of many TVW members in the wood turning skill.

It is a great learning environment and even better fellowship with other club members.
Beginning this year, the turning bee has been renamed in memory of Tom Cowan, one of the “founding fathers” of the Tennessee Valley Woodworkers club. Tom was instrumental in implementing this popular event and hosted the event for many years. He has meant so much to so many members of the club for a very long time.

Come out and make this one of the best turning bees every.
Registration began at the TVW meeting on March 21. If you did not get the chance to register at the March meeting, the signup sheet will be available at the April meeting. if you do not want to wait, you can also register by contacting Larry Wendland, the event chairman, (contact information below) and get your name on the list. They need to know how many will be attending in order to prepare enough bowl blanks for everyone.
You are invited to attend this year’s event at Larry Wendland’s shop for some turning tutorial and some camaraderie with fellow woodworkers.

Cost: $10 each (includes supplied bowl blanks and a great lunch)

     The current custodian is Pete Miller and he can be reached via e:mail at quackers1034@blomand.net. If you have any questions concerning the process of getting a CD please drop him an e:mail.

    Carvers Corner

     
    The carvers met Saturday morning May 5 and discussed plans for two carving seminars. We will hold the first seminar in late September. It will be taught by Blue Pau, a member of our Wood Club and the topic will be carving a half-scale mallard duck that could either be carved with modest detail as a decoy or with fine detail like most of Blue's bird carvings.
    The second seminar is planned for late January and will be taught by Adina Huckins, an accomplished Arkansas carver. Details about both seminars will be released soon in order to get attendance commitments from club members.
    The attached photos are of recent Wood Club member carving projects.
    		  

    The carvers are continuing to meet twice a month on the first and third Saturday's of the month from 8:30 am to 10:30 am at at Jim Jolliffe's shop, located at Jolliffe Acres Lane, Tullahoma, TN.

    NAME TAG INFORMATION

    If you are a recent new member or had requested a new name tag, a box of name tags will be available at the next meeting. In the  future, name tags will be made for new members and available for pickup at the next regular monthly meeting. Name tags for other  members will be made upon request only and will also be available for pickup at the next meeting. Please contact Chuck Taylor (931-728-7086 or email taylor_cw@charter.net) for information or name tags.

    SHOW AND TELL

    Paul Jalbert showed Wood Spirit carving made for Tim’s Ford Heritage Day. Made of popular and finished with spar urethane.
    Jack Tate displayed a pretty box made by gluing walnut, cherry, maple together. Finished with polyurethane.

    		Gary Bennett had a bowl made of spalted cherry with trim made from S. Dakota colored plywood used for gun stock, Lid made of cherry and mahogany. Finish with Tung oil.
    Gary Runyon brought in threaded needle boxes with decorations and a pill box. Made from cherry and dogwood.



    John Hartin showed a couple bowls. One nice bowl made from silver maple and finished with lacquer. Another larger bowl with a rim. Bowl made of walnut crotch with lacquer finish.
    Karen Browning had a natural edge bowl made with assistance from Doyle McConnell. Made of mimosa and lacquer finish.
    Jim Acord had a nice little table made of cherry. He said he made a jig to make legs. Finish wipe on poly.
    Bob Leonard brought 2 knives of wood with sheaths. Finished polyurethane.
    Chuck Taylor showed a dish made of Wild Holly, he also had a hollow vessel made of red bud and finished with gloss lacquer
    John Hill had a large garden tower made of white oak and finished with poly.
    Tony Murphy had some wood tools made of white oak finished with poly. Vise made of red oak, a mallard of white oak finish Danish oil.
    Loyd Ackerman displayed a plaque for the “Tom Cowan Memorial Turning Bee”
    Jim Jolliffe had a face carving of bag pipe person. finished with deft semi-gloss - liquid wax.
    Thomas Clark, a new member, brought in some picture frames he made several years ago. One he called his side mount as he removed a side of the frame and slide glass and picture in; very neat.
    Vince Zaccardi showed picture of bobbins for lace making. It you have and interest in making bobbins contack Vince at vinzac@lighttube.net

    Shop Tip

    I have been watching a lot of youtube’s lately on turning and woodwork. I see a lot of people wearing gloves while turning, and doing other wood work on machinery. I think that gloves without fingers and some with fingers have become a fad. This is not the thing to do. I know a fellow at AEDC that lost a hand while working on a lathe with gloves on. I think our club members should be aware of this danger. - Doyle McConnell
