About The Program

April 18 will be Ronald Young from Chattannoga returning for a wood working program on joinery.

May Meeting
I am excited to be able to have Mike Zinser who was a member years ago in the club and is a member of the state wood-turners assc., do our program for May. as part of the program Mike has extended a invitation to anyone interested, to go see the program he runs the weekend after our meeting. We would have to carpool up but I think it would be of great interest for folks to see his program in action. -- Jack Kincella

We will be having a brief 10 minute presentation from the new director of the Tullahoma Hands on Science Center who has some wood working needs that we may be able to help with over the next couple of months.

Rockets Score Big at The
Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth Meeting

Last year Mr. John Rust, Director Field Operations, Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth, contacted our club and requested assistance in making speaker gifts for a big meeting to be held in March 2017.

Mr. Rust provided us with the desired measurements and our club took the opportunity to show our ingenuity, engineering talents and wood turning and woodworking skills.

As always, our members of our club rose to the challenge. The team proved their ingenuity during the process developed a jig for ensuring the placement of the fins, developed a template to ensure the shape of the rocket was consistent with the measurements for the rockets and a created a jig for the lathe to paint the nosecone of the rocket.

A total of 41 beautifully turned, painted and polished rockets that were provided to Mr. Rust. He commented that the rockets” far exceeded their expectations”.

The rockets were delivered well in advance of their March meeting and gave Mr. Rust the opportunity to have laser engraving of the rockets with the names of the individual guest speakers.

The efforts of the club were recognized during the first day of their meeting. Mr. Rust used the presentation developed by the club to show the attendees the many talents used by club members to take raw wood and turn it into excellent examples of Tennessee wood working art.

The club also received a Certificate of Appreciation; Govern signed Bill Haslam, Governor of the State of Tennessee for our providing Mr. Rusts organization with a piece of fine woodturning that will be cherished by the guest speakers for years to come.

2017 TVW ANNUAL “TOM COWAN MEMORIAL” TURNING BEE ON MAY 20

The Turning Bee is an event in which newer wood turners are paired with a mentor for a “hands-on” experience to get instructions and advice on how to turn a bowl. Everyone get the chance to rough turn a bowl and take your “creation” home with you to dry. This event has spawned the careers of many TVW members in the wood turning skill.

It is a great learning environment and even better fellowship with other club members.
Beginning this year, the turning bee has been renamed in memory of Tom Cowan, one of the “founding fathers” of the Tennessee Valley Woodworkers club. Tom was instrumental in implementing this popular event and hosted the event for many years. He has meant so much to so many members of the club for a very long time.

Come out and make this one of the best turning bees every.
Registration began at the TVW meeting on March 21. If you did not get the chance to register at the March meeting, the signup sheet will be available at the April meeting. if you do not want to wait, you can also register by contacting Larry Wendland, the event chairman, (contact information below) and get your name on the list. They need to know how many will be attending in order to prepare enough bowl blanks for everyone.
You are invited to attend this year’s event at Larry Wendland’s shop for some turning tutorial and some camaraderie with fellow woodworkers.
