July 21 -- Jim Jolliffe will do a program on carving the human face and human form. Jim is one of the Club's carving mentors and hosts the monthly Carvers workshop.

2015 Club Picnic

The 2015 Club picnic was attended by approximately 45. We had very good weather, good food, and a good time of fellowship by all. John Hartin did an excellent job as auctioneer and around $455 was raised from the auction. Thanks go to the Fall Mills owners John and Jane Lovett, for allowing us to use their beautiful area.

CARVER'S CORNER

The highlight of last month's meeting was that Dick Wollam is mentioned several times and a photo of one of his award-winning carvings appears in the latest addition of Chip Chats. This photo shows Dick hard at work adding detail to the soaring eagle project.

The Carvers met on Saturday morning July 4 at Jim Jolliffe's shop. It was
a very pleasant surprise to meet Jim's new neighbor, Greg who is an
accomplished carver too. Greg showed us photos of the military-theme
plaques he has carved. Other carvers in attendance worked on the soaring
eagle or their current project.

We meet in Jim Jollifee’s shop at 201 Jollifee LN, Tullahoma. We regulary meet on the first Saturady of each month

NAME TAG INFORMATION

If you are a recent new member or had requested a new name tag, a box of name tags will be available at the next meeting. In the future, name tags will be made for new members and available for pickup at the next regular monthly meeting. Name tags for other members will be made upon request only and will also be available for pickup at the next meeting. June Show & Tell

Doyle McConnell - He made 6 peppermills out of spalted maple and ambrosia maple and used lacquer to finish them. He also turned a mahogany finial for Ross Roepke and a table leg out of walnut from a picture he got from the internet.

John Hartin - He made an 18'' bowl and a 18" round tray for finger foods (both out of spalted maple) and finished with lacquer.

Ross Roepke - He made 3 boxes out of Western Cedar, walnut and mahogany (one was book matched). Danish oil finish was used on all three.

Pete Miller- He made a box with a deer wood burned on top and a Mallard duck out of basswood. He used acrylic paint on them.

Gary Bennett - He made a round segmented bird house out of Oak flooring (14"high) finished with Spar Urethane. He also made 6 peppermills out of Western Cedar with a polyurethane finish. He also turned a16" bowl, out of Cherry with a butcher block finish.

Josef Maierbacker- He turned a bowl out of Elm or Locust then used Danish oil and lacquer to finish them.

Mickey Knowles- He made a bowl out of Spalted Maple and used a pre-wax finish on it. He also made a box out of Ecuadorian wood (don't know which species)

Bob Reese - He made a bathtub Bass musical instrument using a galvanized tub and designed all the wood pieces to fit each other. He used Chestnut, Poplar and Hard Maple woods.

Shop Tip

Your editor has a Jet 1100 dust collector. The suction had decreased greatly. I read where Jet now has a Vertex Cone in their new collectors. The Vortex Cone improves chip separation and collector bag packing efficiency: eliminates premature filter clogging for sustained performance
I purchased a kit (Spare Parts) from Jet and installed it. My unit now works like new after a thorough cleaning of the filter. The kit is a bit expensive from Jet at $116.25. It you are handy with metal working you could build your own, but I do not have that type of knowledge or tools. There are some U-tube locations that describe the process. The Jet part number is DC1100-CA
