The May meeting will be at 7:00 pm on the 21st at the University of Tennessee Space institute, room H111.
Ronnie Young, professional furniture maker from Chattanooga and fellow Club member, will present a program on furniture. Ronnie will discuss the process of building a Charleston Double Chest of Drawers in the style of Thomas Elfe, a cabinetmaker in Charleston around 1750. During the process, he took pictures of how he researched the piece, references found, preparation of full size drawings, selection and preparation of materials, construction process, problems encountered, final finishing and photography. Using these photos, Ronnie will walk us through how to build a large and seemingly difficult piece of furniture.

Be sure to meet all of our new members and welcome them to the club.
The annual TVW picnic and auction will be held on May
18 at Falls Mill. The event will start at 5 PM but the mill will be open
for you to
tour at 4:30.
The auction is a major fundraiser for the club. So, remember to bring
something for the auction, preferably something you have made.
This is a potluck supper so bring your favorite covered dish. The Club
will provide drinks, plates & forks.
Remember to bring a comfortable lawn chair for you and your guests.
It is now officially “Shop Tour” season. Clean up your
shop because your shop may be on the next tour.
The first shop tour of the year will be May 25. On the tour will be
Geoff Roehm's guitar shop (279 Smith Rd. Sewanee) and Dean Lutes’ shop
(150 Alex Sanders Road, Tracy City). The group will meet at the
Monteagle Diner (740 W Main St., Monteagle) at 08:30 for breakfast and
then
begin the tour.
Tour information and instructions will be given at the
regular monthly meeting.
After the scheduled tour, Paul Fulks will make his new cabin, which he
has built, available to tour for anyone that is interested.
The best thing about the tours is the fact that everyone always picks up
some ideas to apply in their own shop.

The annual “Turning Bee” will be on June 8 and will be
held at Larry Wendland’s Shop. The address is 224 Dunk Blanton Road,
Tullahoma, TN
37388.
This has been our most popular event for a number of years. Most of the
club members got their turning “start” at one of our turning bees.
Come on out and enjoy the fun and fellowship.
Plan to arrive about 8:00 AM to have coffee and pastry (compliments of
the Club).
Written directions to Larry’s shop will be available at the next TVW
regular meeting.
Here is what will happen:
• Coffee, cokes, and water will be provided. (porta-potty provided also)
• Bowl blanks will be provided
• Demonstration on bowl turning
• Hands-on bowl turning sessions for everyone. Hands on turning will
last till -- you finish or wear out
• Bring your own lunch.
This is a great way to learn some basic turning skills or brush up on the skills you already have.
Start those projects you want to display in the
exhibition. The date for the 2013 TVW Exhibition is September 8 – 15.
The location will be at
the University of the South, Sewanee, TN. Dan Maher is the Chairperson
for the event. He will be asking for help as the event date draws
closer. Please give him your support when he asks.
There will be additional information presented at the monthly meetings
concerning the upcoming event.
The carvers held their monthly “gathering” at
Phil Bishop’s shop on May 4th. They worked mostly on individual
projects. The carvers did not
participate in the Cornbread Festival or the Dogwood Festival, due to
the bad weather during the event dates.
The carvers normally meet on the first Saturday of each month the Phil Bishop’s shop. They work on individual or group projects. Anyone interested in carving is welcome to attend these monthly meetings.
There will not be a meeting of the “Flute
Circle” in May. The next flute circle meeting is scheduled for June 10th
at 1 PM. The meeting location is Tom Cowan’s Artisan
Studio in Cowan.

The TVW members supported the Panoply program in
Huntsville on April 27 & 28. They provided demonstrations for the
visitors during the event.

The forum is booming with “expert” solutions to your woodworking
problems and great advice. Take advantage of all the vast amount of
knowledge you can get from the forum members. You would absolutely be
amazed at the wealth of knowledge that your fellow members have to
offer!

missing a great opportunity to learn new techniques and brush up on old
ones. Due to the lack of use, the library may be closed. If you have an
opinion on the matter, talk to the president or Henry, the “librarian”.

Gary Walker showed photos of his “computer box” side table and the walnut Mission style one he built to replace it. He also built a maple Mission style bed and a quilt rack that included his first attempt at inlay. |

Matt Brothers showed photos of a walnut dresser he built to match a bed that he completed a few months ago. The dresser has a tri-fold mirror and the top includes his first attempt at inlay. The dresser’s beaded bracket feet were patterned after an 1810 secretary that he once copied for a client. The drawer construction displayed Matt's woodworking talent. Bob Reese

38th violin and described how he made and
installed the
16-point compass star on the back. Thirty-two
pieces of veneer were cut and assembled on a flat surface to
form the star. Bob’s wife Rheta played a tune to demonstrate
the new fiddle’s tone quality. |

Jim Van Cleave brought two relief carved panels that he did almost twenty years apart. He observed that the deeper carving of the more recent panel caused darker shadows than those in the shallower panel and better enhanced the illusion of a fully 3D carving. |

Jim Jolliffe
discussed the
wood burning technique he used on the Celtic
knot and the man’s silhouette on two cedar panels. He
described how
to create the illusion of shadows and depth by applying more
heat to make the wood surface darker. |

Richard Gulley
brought an
anniversary present he recently made for his
wife, using his CNC router to make many of the parts and
carve the message, “You’ve Captured My Heart”. |

Ever had the piece
you are cutting that final miter on “crawl” a little during the cut? It
doesn’t make for the “perfect” joint.
For parts with mitered ends,
such as picture-frame sides, use a stop-block with the complementary
angle. This provides a more positive “lock”
than a rectangular block. Apply
120-grit, self-adhesive sandpaper to the miter-gauge extension for
better grip on your work-pieces.
