The August meeting will be at 7:00 pm on the 21st at the University of Tennessee Space institute, room H111.
Remember our next meeting is August 21st . The program will be a video by Paul Boyer and his animated wood carvings. Paul Boyer lost a leg when he was 35 years old. He needed something to do, had always been mechanically creative, and started carving. For many years, he has made fascinating mechanical creations with tiny mechanisms to make them move. The mechanisms are as beautiful as the sculptures and many of the sculptures are funny.

Be sure to meet all of our new members and welcome them to the club.
The first meeting of the North Alabama Woodcrafters was held on
August 14th in Huntsville. Greg Meyers, one of our club members, is
spearheading the effort to get the club “up and running”. At
the first meeting, Vince gave a brief overview of our club And Tom Cowan
gave a program on TN & KY furniture. There were about 8 members of
TVW present and about 20 members of the Northern Alabama
Woodcrafters present. Greg followed our format for the meeting and
it went very well. Show and tell was excellent with one fellow
bringing a segmented vessel with over 4,400 pieces. Their next meeting
is Tuesday Sept. 11th.
The annual UTSI Employee Picnic is scheduled for
September 21st. In the past, club members have donated items to be used
as door prizes. It
is a great help to UTSI and provide the club extra exposure. If you are
interested in helping with this activity, start getting your items
ready. Collection dates and additional information will be given at the
August meeting. This is a great way to thank UTSI for allowing us to
use the facilities during our monthly meetings.
Richard Gulley, on behalf of TVW, presented a podium
to the University of Tennessee Space Institute at the July meeting. The
unit was
designed and constructed by club members. The podium will find a
permanent home in the Institute's auditorium. TVW members contributing
to
the project are; Loyd Ackerman (design, wood prep and columns), Stanley
Dunn (donated wood), Richard Gulley (donated wood, columns, wiring
and accessories), Henry Davis (wood prep), Ray Cole (columns), and Bob
Addington (CNC and construction/finishing, wiring and accessories).
“The podium is a welcomed addition to the auditorium,” commented Dr.
Moore, UTSI Executive Director.
The carvers met on August 4th at the shop of Phil
Bishop. Their major work activity at this meeting was devoted to the new
“Totem Pole”
project. Some also worked on individual items.
Plans were also discussed concerning future activities.
The carvers normally meet on the first Saturday of each month and work
on individual or group projects. Everyone is welcome to “join in”.
The Flute Circle group met on July 31 at Tom Cowan’s
Artisan Studio in Cowan. Everyone was encouraged to bring a song that
they have been
practicing during the past month.
The next regular Flute Circle meeting, scheduled for August 28th has
been cancelled. The meetings will start again in September.
The club is experimenting with a plan to insure the
membership is notified when other club members have woodworking tools
and equipment for
sale.
If you have equipment for sale, please continue posting the items on the
forum under “Exchanging Stuff”.
Also, send the information to tv-w@live.com . A list will be compiled
and listed on the web site. An email blast will also be sent

It is now officially “Shop Tour” season. Clean up your shop because your shop may be on the next tour. Thanks to Doyle for coordinating this enjoyable activity. The best thing about the tours is the fact that everyone always picks up some ideas to apply in their own shop.

Don't forget to take advantage of the forum. Instead of just “viewing” the
forum, you can ask questions or answer questions. It is a great way
to swap ideas and learn new tricks of the trade. You will be able
to share your ideas and experiences with other members through the
forum.
The club library is a great way to learn new
techniques and brush up on old ones. Henry has the library “open” at
each regular meeting.

to the library listing on our club website and click on the
underlined titles.

Jay Hazel - made a floor lamp from turned Elm, he also turned a bowl from Box Elder. |

John Duval - framed a large curved stain glass window that he had someone else make for him. This window had taken almost a year to complete. |

Use the right pocket-screw thread type for the material
Sometimes we overlook the obvious. Pocket screws are available with
coarse and fine threads, and it’s important to use the correct
thread to
prevent splits in wood, plywood, and composite materials. Use
fine-thread screws for hardwoods and coarse-thread screws for
softwoods,
plywoods, particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard.
