The November program will be presented by Kimberly Winkle. Kimberly is an assistant professor at Tennessee Tech. She is a member, and current vice-president, of the Highland Rim Chapter of the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists. Her topic will be "Design Considerations in Furniture Making and Wood Turning”.
Come to our November meeting to hear Kimberly present her interesting program.

TVW OFFICER ELECTIONS FOR 2011

The current year is quickly coming to a close and preparations are being made for another great year in 2011. The nominating committee, consisting of Tom Cowan, Loyd Ackerman, Henry Davis, Vince Zaccardi and Chuck Taylor, presented the following slate of officers for 2011 at the October meeting:

What a great evening!!! The TVW Silver Anniversary dinner held on Saturday, October 23 was a wonderful event. About 90 people came together to celebrate the TVW history and happenings. The meal was delicious and the program was terrific. Thanks to Dan Maher and his committee for the planning that went into this milestone activity. Thanks to Loyd, Henry and Tom for the great “historical review” production of the first 25 years of the TVW club.

The annual Christmas Party is scheduled for December 10 at the Church of the Nazarene in Decherd, TN. We will gather for fellowship at 5:00 and dinner will be at 6:00. Martha Taylor is the chairperson for this event. She will be asking for help, so please volunteer to help Martha.
Don’t forget to bring your favorite dish for the “pot-luck” dinner. Plan to come, enjoy the delicious food and have a good time with your fellow Woodworkers. Everyone is encouraged to bring a gift, preferably something you have made, to share at the evening’s gift drawing.
More information will be shared at this month’s meeting.

 The carvers met on November 6th at Phil Bishop's shop. Those attending worked on the "Totem Pole". They are trying to finish the project, since the item has already been sold.

Bob Reese is offering to help you with your sharpening techniques, especially turning gouges. All you have to do is contact Bob and set up a time for your training. You can contact Bob by phone (931-728-7974) or by email (reesecup@bellsouth.net).

TVW dues for 2011 are due, beginning this month. Our dues are $10.00 for a single membership, and $15.00 for a family membership (what a bargain).
You can pay the treasurer, Bob Addington at the meeting or mail your dues check to Bob at his home address (249 Big Oak Drive, Manchester, TN 37355).

Loyd Ackerman displayed a bowl and two hollow vessels he turned from scrap Red Maple.

Doyle McConnell brought in three pepper mills, made from Sugar Maple, that will be gifts.

Ross Roepke displayed a small white oak table with a hidden drawer built into the end of the table.
 
Geoff Roehm brought, discussed and played three beautiful guitars that he made.  Geoff used these instruments during his presented program on “CNC for Woodworking”.

Felix Rees brought in a small walnut table with tapered legs and two drawers.

Dick Wollam brought in a relief carving of a horse head which he brought in a few months ago when he began the project.

Anthony Watts displayed a number of Shaker boxes, finished with milk paint, that he made for Christmas presents.

Will Gaetjens brought in a Biltmore Stick he constructed from Red Oak with Mahogany end caps and secured with popular pegs.
Tom Cowan discussed a small walnut table with lots of delicate and detailed inlays.

When applying liquid stains, the stain soaks more deeply into the pores of the end grain than the face grain, darkening the ends much more than the faces, see top photo below.

One way to even out the stain color is to sand the end grain with a higher-grit sandpaper than the face grain.

In the right photo below, the face is sanded with 220-grit and the end grain with 600-grit, resulting is a much better color match.

This is an interesting web site for all you "do-it-yourselfers". The site has nothing to do with woodworking, but can tell you a lot about trouble-shooting and repairing your appliances.
