 TVW NEWS AND NOTES

COFFEE COUNTY FAIR DEMONSTRATIONS AND EXHIBITS

The annual Coffee County Fair demonstrations are schedule for September 20 – 26th. Doyle McConnell, event chairperson, needs your help. He requests that you be thinking of some way you can contribute to our demonstrations, such as carving, turning, scroll saw, wood-burning, dovetails, fiddle making, flute making, music making, explaining exhibit and passing out brochures, wood bending, finishing, antique repair, chain saw carving, wood bowl carving, puzzle making, shaker box making, wood toy making, inlay and any other “wood” activity. We will make an effort to assign time slots of about 2 hours each.  Display items are also needed to show people what can be done. A list will be passed at the next meeting for signing up.
Please be a part of this “fun & learn” experience.

FRANKLIN CO. FAIR EXHIBIT

The Carvers will be exhibiting at the Franklin County Fair on August 18-21 in Winchester. Harry May is the contact for this event. Additional information will be presented at the next club meeting.

"SHOOTING SEASON IS STILL OPEN"

“Shooting” season is coming to a close. We are still “missing” a few member photos and would like to add to the club’s collection. This is a good way to know the club members. If you have not had your photo taken, we will again be taking photos at the August meeting. We will continue to add “member photos”, as we add new members.

CARVER'S CORNER

The carvers met on August 7th at Phil Bishop's shop. About twelve eager carvers were in attendance. Some of the group continued the finishing on their “Native American Flute”, while others worked on individual projects.
The carvers will be displaying at the Franklin County Fair, which begins the 18th of this month.
Plans were made to provide some “Santa ornament” classes in the future.

A CHANCE TO HELP UTSI

UTSI is having their annual picnic on September 17th. TVW members, in the past, have made and donated items for the fundraising auction held at their picnic. Bring anything you wish to donate to the regular Club meeting on August 17th or contact Richard Gulley. We hope that Club members will respond generously to support UTSI, since they provide the our club with a great meeting place.

JULY MEETING SHOW AND TELL:

If you don't remember what the "Show & Tell items looked like or who showed them -- "click" on the name or item and take a look.

Bob Leonard displayed 5 wooden pocket knives.  He had purchased 2 kits from Woodcraft and made the others.

Tom Cowen displayed and discussed a small chest that he originally saw in Winston Salem.  The chest had beautiful inlay and dovetail drawer joints.

Don Rounsavill brought in two bowls made with a router. The wood was cherry and walnut, with finish being Mahoney’s Walnut Oil.

Jay Hazel brought and discussed a “poor man’s dial indicator” made from wood with an indicator made from coat hanger wire.  He used this to set the blades on his jointer. He also brought a wooden straightedge, two “handmade” bow saws and two scrapers.

Ross Roepke displayed a uniquely designed table and a walnut display pedestal. He also discussed a jig, built to clamp corners, and a box made from “pecky” pine with a poplar lid.

Bob Addington brought and discussed a set of TV trays made from maple.  He discussed some of the difficulties during the “construction”.

Doug Dunlap built a couple of fixtures for making and assembling pen blanks.  One of the fixtures was made from a piece of walnut that had an actual walnut nut imbedded.

Chuck Taylor brought in a red maple turned vase, finished with gloss lacquer and a holly baby rattle.

Harry May brought in a detailed basswood carving of a Jack Ass.

Dick Wollam displayed a narrow table with a red cedar top.

New name tags have been made for every member. If you do not have a new name tag yet, please see Bob Addington.

SHOP TIP

---------------Turntable makes it easy to spray finishes-------------

Spraying a finish can be tricky for beginners and old hands alike, particularly if you have too little space to move around the piece as you spray.

This small project makes for easy rotation of you project while finishing. Build a turntable to use on top of your workbench or finishing table. First, from 3/4" plywood, cut a piece with a 3' diameter, and screw a 3/4" pipe flange at its center. Near the perimeter, attach four or more swivel plate casters, as shown below. Finally, thread a pipe nipple into the flange and drill a hole in the top of your bench to receive the nipple that serves as a turntable pivot. This handy device allows you to rotate pieces easily after you finish spraying each side.

Now, you don’t ever have to guess!

"DO IT YOURSELF" HELP SITE

This is an interesting web site for all you "do-it-yourselfers". The site has nothing to do with woodworking, but can tell you a lot about trouble-shooting and repairing your appliances. The main feature is the "Ask the Repair Guru" section. If you have a repair problem, click here to find the answer to your problem.

LINKS AND CONTACTS ----- NEW LINKS HAVE BEEN ADDED
(TAKE A LOOK)

Take a look at the new listing of Links and Contacts on our web page. To view the section, click on LINKS AND CONTACTS.  The listing contains lots of information to help you in your woodworking "adventures".

If you find a place to purchase something pertaining to woodworking and would like to share that information with others, send an email to Loyd Ackerman with the details for inclusion.  We're not trying to replace the Yellow Pages; this is just for those special items and special contacts.
Information needed is:  Name, address, phone #, and website (if they have one) of the business and what you found them.

MEMBER INFORMATION CHANGES

We strive to always keep the club membership roster listing up-to-date. If you have address, email or phone number changes, please contact Chuck Taylor (931-728-7086) or Bob Addington (931-723-2554) so that your information can be updated in our membership listings. We are making a concentrated effort to keep our membership information current.
