We have a new slate of officers for the calendar year. Please express your appreciation to the 2009 officers for the outstanding year of activities, workshops and seminars. The teamwork demonstrated by members throughout our club is what sets this club apart.

We enter the year with a total membership of 167, which includes spouses, and is a part of the “family” membership.
We are looking forward to another great year.

We regret to announce the death of Vic Vigdorth, one of our TVW members.  His funeral was held on January 2. Vic joined the club in March 1999.

The 2010 programs are getting off to a great start. The January program will be presented by Bob Reese. Bob’s presentation will be entitled "How to build and use a Sharpening Station". This will be a video presentation, in addition to comments and demonstrations by Bob.

We are making plans for the club activities during the current year. . If you have suggestions concerning what you would like to see the club do this year, here is your chance to have them heard. We are looking for new ideas about training, programs, seminars, events or other suggestions that would benefit the club.

With so many new members, we need ideas concerning how we can get to know each other better.

If you have any suggestions or comments, please get them to me by our next meeting. They can be emailed to me at tmcowan@cafes.net  or just flag me down at the meeting. Feel free to contact any of the officers with your suggestions also. The EC committee will be meeting later this month and we need your input.
 

Remember, this year is a TVW milestone year. The club becomes 25years old, which I think speaks a lot about our purpose and just who we are. There must be some community service embedded in here somewhere.

I truly hope this year will be a good one for the club. One thing for sure, it will be as good as we make it. Everyone has always pitched in and I know this year will not be an exception. Looking forward to a great year, together, we can make it happen.

The carvers met on January 9th at the Episcopal Church in Tullahoma. They viewed a "clay to bronze" technique.
The next meeting of the carvers will be announced at the next monthly club meeting.

If you are interested in knowing more about sharpening techniques, especially turning gouges, this is one of your great opportunities. Bob Reese will give you one-on-one training. A new lumber supply source has surfaced in McMinnville. The Burroughs-Ross-Colville Company is located at 301 Depot Street in McMinnville. They now stock the normal supply of lumber and you are welcome to “come in and browse” for that special piece of lumber needed for the next project. The phone number is 931-473-2111. A tour of the facility is being planed for the near future.

We have a great library of information. Our digital library just keeps growing. Thanks to Henry Davis for being the “caretaker” of this information.

Be sure and take advantage of all the vast amount of material available. If you have woodworking related VHS tapes or DVDs that you no longer want, we hope you will consider donating them to the Club.

Loyd Ackerman displayed several segmented vessels, which are Christmas presents for family members.  He also showed a small box, letter openers and a ‘scrape’ vessel made from cut-offs.  He also showed a picture of the gift to Ann Cline for her work on publicity for the exhibition.

Henry Davis displayed a ‘quick-release chinch-weaving frame’.  He went through the construction process, and these are sold over the Internet.  Henry also displayed three bowls that were finished from leftover blanks from the turning bee.

Ross Roepke showed pictures of the several clocks that he has designed and built over the years.  He talked about a chair he built and showed some seabirds.

Jim Everett showed pictures of an 8 ft. by 7 ft. intarsia "masterpiece" of a farm scene, which he completed for a customer.  The animals in the scene are portraits of the lady’s own animals.   He also showed another beautiful farm scene.

Joe Kuhn showed pictures of three ‘half-ship’ models and a lighthouse doorstop constructed by his brother-in-law, who is legally blind!

Jay Hazel showed how he designed and constructed a flatbed sander using his lathe as the drive mechanism.  He also brought a solid body guitar made from mesquite and a jewelry box made out of canary wood.

Billy May brought a piece carved out of marble.

John Wendling showed a wooden gas gage used on a Model T Ford.

Ralph Hand brought a wooden chest, which had a curved top and sides, wich was constructed out of pine and walnut. he laso had a "rocker footstool".

Bob Addington had a large oak porch bench.  He had to make over 50 mortise and tenon joints in building it.

Bob Molloy brought a cherry table made from lumber purchased from BRC.  It had a very intricate turned pedestal base.

A member (did not get the name) displayed a sassafras walking stick.

Bob Leonard displayed and discussed some of his carving collection.

Allen Odell brought a couple of footstools.

Paul Jalbert brought a carved sign, which will be displayed on a friend’s farm.

Tom Gillard showed two wooden quilt blocks and a model sunfish sailboat.  He also showed some George Dickel barrel staves that he is working on.

Tom Cowen brought two Chippendale mirrors, one walnut and one cherry.

Bob Reece brought a display case, which held forty carved peach pits.  He also had a magnolia bowl that didn’t quite make it.

Felix Rees displayed a turned lamp and a second turned lamp that had a set of deer antlers mounted on its base.

Gary Runyon displayed a miniature router fixture he constructed for use with a small rotary type tool.

Phil Myers displayed a turned bowl he made during a turning class at Woodcraft and discussed the “difficulty” he encountered.

Chuck Taylor showed a display case for a grandson’s prize hockey puck souvenir. He also had a cherry silver chest and a piece of crab apple that will be turned into a bowl.

Doyle McConnell displayed maple letter openers, a maple nutcracker and a compact case made from a walnut burl.
