 TVW NEWS AND NOTES

FALL SEMINAR

The Fall Seminar, held on Saturday October 24, was great. If you did not attend, you missed an excellent learning experience and a great day.
Ronnie Young, the presenter, gave an outstanding presentation concerning every step required to make a small table. The program started with a completed table, and then Ronnie discussed and demonstrated the many steps involved. The steps included planning, lumber selection, grain consideration, lumber preparation, joinery, turnings, inlays, and finishing.

Thanks to Matt Brothers for hosting the Seminar, to Johnnie Brown for chairing the activity and Tom Cowan for demonstrating the turned leg segment of the Seminar.

Ronnie’s table, made during the Seminar, and a table made by Tom Cowan were given away at the end of the Seminar.

Winning Ronnie’s table was Vince Zaccardi and Mike Broadrick was the winner of Tom Cowan’s table.

SPECIAL OCTOBER PROGRAM

Our October program was a huge success. Representatives of the Delta, Porter Cable, and Dewalt brands of the Black & Decker Corporation were here to discuss some of their products. Everyone attending the program had a chance to try out some new tools and provide some feed back to the manufacturer. In addition to learning about the products, some attending were lucky enough to take some of the products home. The company gave away a lot of items, as door prizes. The big winners included Art Brickse, Bob Brown, Eddie Branum, John Wending, Paul Jalbert, Phil Meyers, Ralph Hand, Shirley Bishop, Vic Vigdorth, Vince Zaccardi and Walter Clement.

CARVER'S CORNER

The Carvers held their regular monthly meeting on November 7th with 6 carvers participating. They met at Phil Bishops' shop and worked on individual projects.

The carvers presented Wounded Warrior canes to disabled veterans on October 20th.

Some of the carvers attended the Huntsville Carving Show. Dick Wollam won 5 ribbons for his carvings.

The next meeting of the carvers will be announced at the monthly club meeting.

WEBB SCHOOL ARTS AND CRAFT FESTIVAL

The carvers were not able to exhibit at the Festival this year, due the severe weather conditions.

UTSI NEEDS YOUR HELP

UTSI was in need of 2 new podiums.  They will supply the materials, but they would like our Club to design/build them. More information concerning this activity will be given at our next meeting.

WOODWORKER'S HUMOR

WOODWORKING TIP OF THE MONTH

How to level tables to tools

It's easy to do, and essential for the safe and effective operation of workshop machinery.

Whether you're building the dual-function workstation or making your own base for a tool, such as a tablesaw, mitersaw, or thickness planer, you need to level the tables to the tool (bring them to the same plane). Coplanar tables provide a continuously even worksurface necessary for stable stock support, accurate cutting, and safe workpiece movement. You'll learn how to level tables in four simple steps.

You also can use this process to check and level accessories, such as infeed and outfeed support tables, to your tools. Because accessories have various types of leveling provisions, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on how to adjust them.

Step 1 Find two straightedges of sufficient length to span the tool and extension tables. You can use metal straightedges, or make wooden ones by jointing the edges of two boards. For example, to reach across the 51"-long router-cabinet top of the dual-function workstation and the 20"-wide cast-iron tablesaw top, we made straightedges by jointing two 1x6x72" boards.
Clamp the straightedges along the front and back of the extension table or top, as shown in the photo below. (When leveling an accessory table to a tool, clamp the straightedges to the tool's table.)

Step 2 Determine the approximate shim thicknesses needed for leveling by measuring the offset between the tool's table and extension near the straightedges, as shown in the photo below. Then, measure the gaps between the straightedges and the tool table at the table's opposite edge and adjust accordingly.
