Our June program will be presented by Tom Cowan. Tom will be discussing "Furniture History", as his topic. He usually does exhaustive research on furniture pieces before launching into the “creation” of the furniture. Tom’s programs are always interesting and informative. This program promises to be a very good program. Take the opportunity come and learn about the history of furniture.

Our annual picnic was held on Saturday June 6th at Falls Mill. The food was great, the location was fantastic, the weather was wonderful and the fellowship was outstanding. In summary, everyone had a great time.

A big “thanks” to the event chairman, Felix Rees and all his “helpers”. Felix had everything organized and things went smoothly.

Also, our thanks go to John & Janie Lovett for hosting the event at Falls Mill.

The auction, conducted by Richard Gulley and assisted by Anthony Watts, raised over $700.

The "In the Spirit of Fine Woodworking" Exhibition is now history.
Below are comments by Loyd Ackerman, our club president, concerning the successful Exhibition:

    One sometimes wonders what this Club is all about.  I’ve been asked that question from new members and old timers alike -- in fact, one old timer just recently.  I think “In the Spirit of Fine Woodworking” is a good example of what the Club is all about.  Let me explain.

    The idea of an exhibition was put forth in a meeting of the Club’s Executive Committee in January of 2008.  Over the next few months a plan began to emerge toward a major exhibition in the spring of 2009.  As things progressed, committees were formed and the plan expanded.  The fact that not one of the people selected to head the committees refused speaks to what I’m going to call the Club’s culture.  Instead of asking for volunteers, we usually decide who would be the best to head up a task and ask them to do it.  The fact that we can generally expect members to accept the job is a part of our cultural foundation.  As a result, leaders are able to get the right people into the needed committees.

    The committee heads in the Spirit exhibition exceeded their responsibilities in every respect.  We needed to get key results from each of these members to achieve our goals for the exhibition, and we got more than we asked for.  Of course, there were some spirited discussions during the run up to the exhibition, but we had them in the true spirit of cooperation and good will.

    When the leadership team was in place, it became time to ask for volunteers.  Once again the Club’s culture came into play.  When there was a job to be done, there were workers to do it.  Volunteers met for such things as to make fixtures, install the banners, and even to recruit other volunteers.  We never were in a position of not enough help.

    One major concern was to get enough exhibitors and enough exhibits to have a well rounded show.  Exhibitors stepped up, paid attention to needs, and volunteered to provide whatever we needed.  Some exhibitors offered many items for the show along with notice that we could choose to have them withdraw some of their items if we didn’t need them.  These unselfish acts were so very helpful to planning the layouts and mix of exhibits that we not only were able to show all of them, but the mix turned out to be excellent – not too much or too little of any type of woodworking skill.

    The main thing about “In the Spirit of Fine Woodworking” was the “Spirit of the members”.  I’m always amazed at the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie that shows itself at any Club event, be it a picnic or an exhibition, but these exhibitions draw out the best in our membership.  Again, the Club’s Culture exhibits itself.

    One final thought:  One of the goals of the exhibition was to get as many members as possible to participate.  That we enjoyed the direct support of 62 members, and visits by many other members, is testimony to the spirit of the Tennessee Valley Woodworkers.

    Thanks to everyone who participated for making “In the Spirit of Fine Woodworking” a memorable event for all of us.

The Carvers’ held a deep relief carving workshop, taught by master carver, Randy Walters, on May 29-31. The successful workshop was held at Carla Wright’s shop in Lynchburg, with 10 people attending.

The carvers also held their monthly carving meeting at Phil Bishop’s shop on June 6th. They worked on the deep relief carvings they started at the carving workshop. To view all the photos, go to the "gallery", then select "carver events", the select Randy Walters Carving Class folder.

A new lumber supply source has surfaced in McMinnville. The Burroughs-Ross-Colville Company is located at 301 Depot Street in McMinnville. They now stock the normal supply of lumber and you are welcome to “come in and browse” for that special piece of lumber needing for the next project. The phone number is 931-473-2111. A new Woodcraft store is now open in Chattanooga on 1414 Jenkins Road.  Tto draw interest to the store, we are having Garrett Hack to teach a one day, hands-on hand-cut dovetail class in the classroom at the WoodCraft Store on Saturday, July 11, 2009 from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

Garrett will work one on one and hands-on with up to twelve students to help them master this joint.  The tuition for this class is $210.00.

After lunch he will be in the store demonstrating use of hand planes, answering questions, and signing autographs.  This portion of the day is free and open to the general public.

The project, “repairing windows”, at Falls Mill is currently on hold. Jane and John have been Club members for many years and host the Club's annual picnic on their grounds. DIGITAL LIBRARY NEWS

Don’t forget to take advantage of the vast amount of material that is available in the Club library. Also, if you have woodworking related VHS tapes or DVDs that you not longer want we hope you will consider donating them to the Club’s Digital Library. Matt Brothers showed slides of bookcases he built for a client. He had photos of various views.

Ross Roepke had some chopsticks he made and some fancy ones from Indonesia.  He also displayed a mahogany humidor with some inlaid cherry.

Bob Addington had three pine bowls, from small to large, which he turned green and dried only for six weeks.  He finished them with five coats of wipe-on poly.

Jim Everett showed a cedar desk set, consisting of a pen holder, letter holder and desk clock. He also displayed an outstanding relief carving in which he has 800 hours of work.

Dick Wollam showed two carved ducks.  One was out of butternut and left natural, the other out of scrap pine and painted.

John Wendling brought in a wooden chest of unknown origin.
