Our February program will be presented by David Sapp, owner of the Woodcraft store in Franklin, Tennessee. He will discuss, in detail, the training programs and classes scheduled for the Franklin store. He will also have other information to share with our club.

The Executive Committee met on January 23rd. The general planning for 2007 events and the club calendar was established at this meeting.  The major events and tentative dates are listed below. The list will be updated as additional information is known.

The splinter carvers met at Jim Wright’s shop on February 3rd, with six carvers attending the session. Jim started a lesson on carving a “Spirit Face”. It was a very good class and will continue on Feb. 17 8:30am to 3:00pm.

The carvers have decided to carve a Cigar Store Indian for their Dogwood Festival project. Photos from the last carving session are posted on the club web site in the gallery section under “carver’s events”. Click here to see the photos of the latest meeting activities.

Thanks to Tom Cowan for his interesting and informative January program. His demonstrations and discussion, concerning the aspects of “spindle turning”, was of interest to all attending. He sure makes it look “easy”.

Also, thanks to Anthony Watts. Anthony has volunteered to be the club photographer for our "Show & Tell" segments at our regular monthly meetings.

Henry Davis has been named the official “Historian” of the Tennessee Valley Woodworkers by the Executive Committee. At his own expense, and with much personal effort, he has maintained a repository of photos and memorabilia related to Club activities and made them available for review at Club functions. Mr. Davis will retain ownership of the notebooks and will continue to make them available at Club activities.  He asks for members to continue providing photos, articles, and other memorabilia as in the past

Our name tags are made by K&S TROPHIES, 510 Country Club Drive, Tullahoma. They were about $5.00 including tax the last time we checked. When in Tullahoma you can go by and have one made, call them at 455-7359 or email them at kands@cafes.net. The tags are 1" x 3" with white letters on a blue background. Just tell the folks that you want a Tennessee Valley Woodworkers name tag.   If you are never in Tullahoma, contact Jim Steadman (931-962-2940) or Chuck Taylor (931-728-7086) and they will secure a tag for you.

We are in the process of getting new club business cards printed that will have our new meeting location. For those who have not heard about our cards they are free to members and contain information about the club.  The cards are designed so you can sign your name if you choose.    If you want a supply of the new cards, see Jim Steadman.

We strive to always keep the club membership roster listing up-to-date. If you have address, email or phone number changes, please contact Chuck Taylor (931-728-7086) or Jim Steadman (931-962-2940) so that your information can be updated in our membership listings. We are making a concentrated effort to keep our membership information current.
 
 

Henry Davis brought a “Ripping aid for a table saw”fixture he made and showed a short video clip on how to use the fixture.

Tom Cowan displayed and discussed some cabinet doors he made that had a carved and painted floral design. He also showed pictures of some of his work. The pictures included a walnut corner cabinet (Dunlap pediment), stairway for a contractor, cherry entertainment center, fireplace mantel, bed (his design), cherry drop-leaf table and a small table with ebony knobs.

Bob Lowrance showed photos of a workbench he recently built. The workbench was finished with decorative Intarsia designs on the sides and front.

Tom Gillard, Jr. showed photos of a hickory headboard, cherry fireplace mantel, a cabinet and an airplane wing repair he was working on.

Ken Burgess displayed a carving of an eagle head mounted on driftwood.

Doyle McConnell showed a bamboo lidded box he received from Taiwan and a walnut walking stick with an oak burl top.

Newt Wright brought and discussed a “wooden safe” bank box that had a working hand-made combination lock.

Ross Roepke showed a cedar jewelry box with curly mahogany top insert, a table top with burl insert and a white oak border and a walnut table with a figured insert, mahogany ends and curly maple trim.

Larry Bowers brought a spalted maple bowl that he had roughed at Tom’s shop and finished at the Coffee County Fair.

Dick Wollam displayed a carved “butler” that had a shelf for a tea set.

Jim Van Cleave brought and discussed a maple table with cherry drawer fronts. He also had installed some decorative “square” pegs.

Scott Short brought a small cherry bowl and a walnut pitcher.

John Malaspino brought and discussed a rocker he had made.

Ken Gould brought a pine relief carving (leaf design) and caricature carving of a cowboy.
 
 

Sawing and sanding operations generate a lot of irritating fine dust in the workshop.

Here's a simple and simple way to rid your shop of airborne dust. Install a furnace filter on one side of a box fan with wire or bungee cords. Position the fan adjacent to the work area so it pulls air away from you.
Clean the filters periodically with a shop vacuum.
