The August program will be an armchair (well folding chair) tour of Walter Clement's shop in Old Salem.  Seeing Walter's collection of antique tools in a setting of "a turn of the 20th century" workshop building is an experience in itself, but add to that working demonstrations using the old tools, and tales of their origins, and you get a real appreciation of what craftsmen endured and enjoyed in those days.

Dear Members,

 I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated in our recent opinion survey.  This effort on your part and that of the Executive Committee will help the Club to formulate meaningful and enjoyable programs and events for the future and enable us to tailor the way we do business to best suit your expectations.   A report is provided with this issue of Splinters as promised.  If you have any questions or comments, please contact one of the Club executives.

There were many issues discussed in the survey. The executive committee met on July 31, 2006 to review and discuss your responses.  I think it’s fair to say that we’re just getting started on the task of understanding the message of the survey, but we’ve already begun to take steps to address some of the issues and will continue with that effort.

Your opinions and suggestions are important to the Club’s future, so I encourage you to continue to share them. Thank you again for your participation.

The July shop tour was another great success. Everyone attending enjoyed the activities. About 25 members attend the tour that included the shops of Matt Brothers, David Jacobs and Collins Roan. Thanks to the tour hosts and their willingness to “invite” the club into their shop.
The next shop tour is scheduled for August 19th and will be in the Manchester area. The group will meet at Shoney's in Manchester and visit the shops of Johnny Brown, David Whyte & Bob Reese. Additional information will be given at the August club meeting.

The July carvers meetings was hosted by Jim Wright. Jim continues to teach the carvers the proper techniques used to carve an “Indian bust”. They expect to complete the project at their next meeting on August 17th. Each carver seems very interested in the classes and techniques. Also, they all seem to be having a good time.
 
 

Bob Lowrance brought his carving of a caricature of a line-dancing cowgirl.

Jim Van Cleave displayed the cherry silver chest he had completed. He brought the chest last month as a “work in progress”.

Walter Clement brought and discussed a wooden mold he used in the process to cast a connecting rod for an old piece of equipment.

Doug Dunlap showed his turned bowl, made from hackberry.

Harry May shared his carving of a moose. This was a commissioned piece and was a very detailed carving.

Steve Shores displayed a piece of cottonwood bark in which he had carved a “whimsical house”.

Newt Wright made a detailed three-dimensional American Flag and painted it with acrylic paints.

Tom Gillard brought and discussed photographs of a carving Dick Wollam completed for the boy scouts. He gave Dick recognition for his work. The carving of the Boy Scout emblem is hung, as a focal point, in the Scout headquarters in Nashville.

Lewis Bryant brought four bowls that he had completed. Lewis has an additional 105 bowls roughed and ready for finishing.

Chuck Taylor showed a potpourri bowl made from holly and a small redbud bowl.

Dave Whyte brought a walnut band saw box and discussed some of the sanding attachments used to help complete the box.

Ken Gould displayed his toolbox designed to hold carving tools. The project gave him a chance to use his new dovetail jig. The box had an iron handle that was hand-forged.

Ross Roepke discussed and demonstrated the joinery he was using in a piece of furniture to be able to break down the furniture for shipping. He also announced that he has curly maple for sale.

Doyle McConnell brought a maple turned vase with a threaded lid. He discussed the making of the threads and the threading tool used.

Deacon Taylor told of his purchase of woodworking equipment, after pricing ready-made cabinets. He decided to make his own. The photos of the finished cabinets showed a very neat design and a good finished product.

Maurice Ryan made an announcement about a recent safety bulletin concerning the Ryobi radial arm saw. He discussed the defect and what to do if you have one of the saws. The saws should not be used.
 
 

Have you ever finished a beautiful project, only to see those dreaded glue spots in your finish?
Too often, you don't see spots of glue film on your project until after you've started to apply the stain or finish.

Expose glue smears by wiping all joints and adjacent areas with mineral spirits or lacquer thinner. The glue smears will remain light-colored but the surrounding wood will darken. Be careful not to soak the wood with solvent.

The beautiful mahogany boards I’d just purchased were too long to fit inside my compact pickup’s bed. I didn’t want to cut them shorter, so I decided to slide them over the tailgate and through the cab window to rest one edge on the dashboard.
Just as I got home, it began to rain. To keep my precious boards from getting soaked, I quickly backed into the garage. Unfortunately, I miscalculated how far the boards extended beyond the tailgate.
I sure wish I had included windshield-glass replacement on my auto insurance!!!
