SPLINTERS

NOVEMBER

FELLOW WOODWORKERS & TURKEYS ALIKE I’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH

YOU THE THOUGHTS OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ON THE TURKEY, OUR BIRD OF

NOVEMBER. BEN SAID “I WISH THE BALD EAGLE HAD NOT BEEN CHOSEN AS

THE REPRESENTATIVE OF OUR COUNTRY; HE IS A BIRD OF BAD MORAL

CHARACTER; LIKE THOSE AMONG MEN WHO LIVE BY SHARPING AND ROBING,

HE IS GENERALLY POOR, AND OFTEN VERY LOUSY.

THE TURKEY IS A MUCH MORE RESPECTABLE BIRD, AND WITHAL A TRUE ORIGINAL NATIVE OF AMERICA.”   THANK YOU   BEN.

DATELINE FALLS MILL, TENNESSEE

AS ALWAYS, PIONEER SKILLS DAY AT FALLS MILL WAS A GREAT SUCCESS.

A GREAT DEAL OF THE CREDIT GOES TO SOME OF OUR MEMBERS WHO HAD

WORKING DEMONSTRATIONS AT THE EVENT. TOM COWAN, HENRY DAVIS,

PHIL BISHOP, AND WINFIELD BENNETT WERE PARTICIPANTS IN THE

EVENT. BE SURE TO PUT THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR NEXT YEAR.

OCTOBER MEETING

PRESIDENT BILL MOYE APPOINTED A NOMINATING COMMITTEE MADE UP OF

HIMSELF, BILL CHEW, AND JACK TOWNSEND. THEY WILL REPORT AND MAKE

THEIR NOMINATIONS AT THE NOVEMBER MEETING SO BE THERE. IF YOU

HAVE ANY FAVORITE TOY PLANS BE SURE TO BRING THEM TO THE NOVEMBER

MEETING.

SHOW AND TELL AND SHOW AND TELL AND SHOW AND TELL AND SHOW AND

AS TOM GILLARD SAID, “ TO PUT IT SUCCINCTLY, MORE BOATS”. AND SO

BILL CHEW SAID “BIGGER PLATE” THEN THE INSPIRED HENRY DAVIS

SHOWED STAVED BOWLS THAT PHIL BISHOP HAD DEMONSTRATED THE MEETING BEFORE. RICHARD GULLEY HAD A TURKEY CALL, SOUNDED A LITTLE SICK TO ME, BUT I THINK PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE IS THE KEY. IF YOU

ARE INTERESTED IN SOME EXOTIC WOOD CONTACT RAY COLE. HE HAS A

NICE SUPPLY OF BOCKRAY FOR ONE OF A KIND ITEMS. BILL MOYE SHOWED

THE UTSI SEAL THAT HE WAS TO BECOME FAMOUS FOR, I GUESS HE DID IF

HE FINISHED IT. I THINK HE MET HIS DEADLINE. FRED HELTSEY

BROUGHT IN A TIE CLASP THAT EVEYONE LIKED, AND THAT REMINDS ME.

IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO A MEETING IN A WHILE TO SEE WHAT SOME OF

OUR NEW MEMBERS ARE BRINGING IN, JUST SHOW UP FOR A RARE TREAT

SOMETIME.   AND LAST , BUT NOT LEAST TOM CHURCH SHOWED A GLUED UP

CIDER PRESS THAT HE WON A BLUE RIBBON FOR AT THE GRAYS HARBOR

COUNTY FAIR IN 1976. STILL GOING STRONG, AND SO IS THE CIDER

PRESS.

PROGRAM PROGRAM, WHO’S GOT THE PROGRAM

BOB REESE SENT A LOT OF FOLKS HOME HAPPY AFTER THAT EXCELLENT

PROGRAM LAST MONTH. THE HANDOUTS WERE VERY INFORMATIVE AND FOLKS

WERE CLUTCHING THEM TIGHT. AND FROM THE PROGRAM CAME THE QUOTE

OF THE MONTH “ THE MORE YOU STIR IT, THE MORE IT STINKS”. THIS

IS WHAT BOB SAID ABOUT WIPING GLUE WITH A WET CLOTH INSTEAD OF

LETTING IT DRY.

TOM AND I WON’T BE WITH YOU THIS MONTH. WE’LL BE UP IN THE

FROZEN NORTH, PREPARING TO EAT TURKEY WITH THE REST OF THE

CHURCHES. SO HAVE A GOOD MEETING AND SOMEBODY TAKE-NOTES.

SPECTACULAR SATURDAY SEMINAR SPECIAL

YES INDEED IT WAS ANOTHER EXCELLENT SATURDAY SEMINAR. SATURDAY

NOVEMBER 10 AT AROUND 8:00 FOURTEEN OR FIFTEEN OF US GATHERED AT

PHIL BISHOP’S SHOP TO SPEND A DAY WITH ALF SHARP, WOODWORKER

EXTRORDINAIRE, FROM W00DBURY TENNESSEE. ALF MAKES HIS LIVING

MAKING EIGHTEENTH CENTURY REPRODUCTION FURNITURE. THE ENTIRE DAY

WAS INFORMATIVE, ENLIGHTENING, ENJOYABLE & EDUCATIONAL; TO

MENTION ONLY A FEW. ALF, BEING SELF-TAUGHT, BROUGHT AN ADDED

INSIGHT INTO PRODUCTIVE COMBINATIONS OF OLD TECHNIQUES MIXED WITH

THE BENEFITS OF MODERN POWER TOOLS.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE UNABLE TO ATTEND, WE’LL DO A BRIEF RECAP JUST TO GIVE YOU A FLAVOR FOR THE DAY. WE STARTED OFF WITH

SOME BASIC CARCASE JOINERY WITH EMPHASIS ON AN EXPOSED DOVETAIL

JOINT FOR A DRAWER BLADE. NEEDLESS TO SAY, ALF MADE IT ALL LOOK

EASY, AS HE PASSED ON NUMEROUS SIMPLE “TRICKS” THAT REALLY DO

MAKE IT EASIER. A CHILI LUNCH WAS PROVIDED BY THE BISHOPS, OUR

MOST GRACIOUS HOSTS.. .THANK YOU! ONCE AGAIN.

OUR AFTERNOON WAS FILLED WITH MORE HINTS AND IDEAS AS WELL AS THE

CARVING OF A BALL AND. CLAW FOOT. ALF TOOK US FROM A BLANK SQUARE

TO A MOSTLY COMPLETE CARVED LEG. THEN WE MOVED ON TO SOME RELIEF

CARVING. WE FINISHED OUT THF DAY WITH SOME GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

ABOUT FINISHES, TOOLS, WOODS AND WHAT HAVE YOU. AN EXCELLENT DAY.

OUR THANKS TO ALF, PHIL, SHIRLEY, AND TOM COWAN. AN ADDED BONUS

TO ALL ATENDEES INCLUDED A PREPACKAGED BUNDLE OF “SCRAPS” FROM

PHIL’S PILE OF ENDS ETC.. .I’VE ALREADY HAD A LOT OF FUN JUST

SORTING THROUGH IT.. .DONT MISS THE NEXT ONE...

NOVEMBER MEETING

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING... .TUESDAY NOVEMBER 20, 7:00 P.M.

AT THE DUCK RIVER ELECTRIC BUILDING IN DECHERD. OUR PROGRAM IS.

VERY TIMELY.. .TED BALDWIN WILL SHARE SOME OF SANTA’S SECRETS WITH

US            MAKING AND ASSEMBLING TOYS.   IT PROMISES TO BE SOMETHING WE

CAN ALL PUT TO IMMEDIATE USE.

OUR VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO

TOM GILLARD FOR SUBMITTING

THE FOLLOWING IDEA FOR

EXTENDING THE LIFE OF YOUR

SANDPAPER. PLENTY OF YOU

SUBSCRIBE TO MAGAZINES
