WHATTA PICNIC _
A picnic on the green was the event of July. Great weather (in spite of the drought), outstanding food, real fellowship, and a lot of assistance from DREMEC all combined to make our first picnic a really great happening. For those who weren’t able to make it, you missed chef Phil torching off the grill with about a gallon of lighter fluid. Some were afraid the fire dept. might have to bring it under control! As usual, Phil had it all in hand and proceeded to cook up a bunch of outstanding hamburgers and hot dogs. The covered dishes brought by all once again proved that we’re -not only good woodworkers, we have an ability to pick put good cooks as our mates!
Our thanks to everyone for your help and support in making the July picnic a success.
AUGUST MEETING A SURPRISE _
The next meeting of the Tennessee Valley Woodworkers will be held at the DREMEC meeting room in DechErd at 7:00 pm. Tom Cowan thought he might be able to have the meeting at his shop but his support to the movie industry won’t allow it. For those who haven’t heard, Tom is building a landscape in miniature for a production to be filmed in the Memphis area. Hopefully Tom will give us a glimpse of his progress. Since neither Henry Davis nor I have been able to contact our Program Chairman and Vice President, we aren’t really sure of the August meeting topic. Knowing Phil, it will be great. Come join us and be surprised!
OLDE TIMEY DAY DISPLAY
Our first display as a club will be at the Winchester Olde Timey Day on October 4th. At the June meeting a sign up sheet was passed around to see how many members might be interested in participating. If you weren’t able to make up your mind then but now want to get your name on the list get in touch with Tom Cowan, Susan Church or Tom Church.
Our display will feature your woodworking projects. It’s a time to let our neighbors see the varied nature of our club members interests. You can display items for sale if you wish. Since space may be a little tight, you may want to display price, your name, and address on the item you have for sale and keep your inventory at home. We’ll hear more about arrangements at the August meeting. The real message is to get the shop tools fired up and get ready to participate. With the event less than two months away, it takes some of us that long to find that new cosmic saw blade we purchased after our last project.
HINTS & TIPS
To keep a frequently used white or yellow glue bottle from clogging during storage, store it inverted in a container of water. A container that fits somewhat tightly around the bottle will keep the mess to a minimum. The key is to keep the tip in water so air can’t get to the glue and harden it.
You can make a nifty device to find the center of a boards edge. Ask me at the next meeting and I’ll show you how to do it!
How many times have you spent hours searching through magazines for that certain article or set of plans? Why not cut the table of contents out of your magazines. At least you’ll know what magazine it’s in and you only have to find the magazine. Oh, I’ve tried using the trusty computer to catalog such articles of interest, it takes more time than searching through all my old books! I now have a notebook containing tables of contents.
