Monthly Meeting Minutes

July 21, 2009

*Loyd Ackerman opened the meeting at 7:00, and gave a welcome to Scott Tinker and Chris McKinney from the new Chattanooga Woodcraft store. They circulated a list to all in attendance. If your name is on the list, and you visit their new store, you receive $10.00 off a purchase.

*Please give Chuck Taylor all updated information such as email addresses, phone numbers and mailing addresses, so that the membership roster can be kept up to date.

*We now have 24 titles in our library. See Henry Davis to check any out. The check-out period is from meeting to meeting.

*Remember that the carvers meet every first Saturday. Call Harry May or Dick Wollam for more information.

*Doyle McConnell reminded us that the Coffee County Fair is coming up the 3^rd week of September. Be thinking of something to demonstrate at the fair!!

*Henry Davis and Jim Van Cleave will present our August program on hand planes. They will show their collections and give the history and use of hand planes.

*Remember the cabinet that is being sold at auction. Bids will be accepted until September 15.

*Henry Davis and Loyd Ackerman gave a basic club introduction and a slide show of our exhibition at the Kiwanis Club Meeting on July 13.

*Karla Wright has more of Jim’s wood to sell. She is offering 20% of the current summer price, and has basswood and butternut. Her number is 931-759-6608, or wright@netzero.com.

*Chuck Taylor brought 2 videos for us to enjoy…”When Engineers Do Woodworking!”

*Tom Gillard brought pictures from one of the great lodges in Glacier National Park.

*Show and Tell

Ross Roepke brought 4 outstanding items for the Partners in Healing auction. They were a Cherry bench, a modern table from Spanish Cedar and Walnut, a stylized box from Spanish Cedar and Poplar, and a stool from Cedar. He also brought a bowl.

Chuck Taylor brought a memory box of Cherry with an Ambrosia Maple top. It had a drawer with a stop. He delighted us with a “doily story.”

He also had a bowl and vase made from the crabapple tree that used to be in front of the Manchester library, and vase from Pecan out of Doyle’s stash.

Dick Wollam had a stylized carved Hooded Madagascar Duck from Butternut, and then surprised us with an extraordinary one he had carved from scraps and then painted!

Doyle McConnell fashioned a bowl from White Ash that once stood in front of the Manchester Courthouse. It had a piece of Oak burl pieced in it to cleverly piece a crack. He also had two exquisite salt and pepper sets, one from oak burl and one from spalted maple, and a pepper mill made from segmented spalted maple.

Ralph Hand brought an owl he had carved 24-25 years ago with a dremel tool. It was of Walnut with Sumac eyes.

Bob Leonard brought a Cottonwood bark fantasy house carving.

Ron Reimers brought 3 Indian flutes with carved totems, and then treated us to playing them. He also had a relief carving called “My Father’s Medicine Pouch.”

Jay Hazel had a family reunion coming up and he had made round jewelry boxes for his daughter and granddaughter that had partitions. For the men he made dresser top organizers with change cups and cell phone holders. He also had carved salad tongs with spring action.

Larry Dameworth made an observation bee hive with the help of Ray Cole.

The Program

Scott Tinker and Chris McKinney came from the Hamilton Place, Chattanooga Woodcraft. They carry lots of fine lumber, even musical grade lumber. (Scott is a former opera singer, and understands tone.)

They have 40 inch wide slabs, and 41 species of turning stock. They also carry a full line of Lie Nielson hand planes and chisels, and Robert Sorby Chisels and turning tools, among other things.

Take I-40 to I-75 and then take exit 1-A. They will be ½ mile on East Brainerd Road on the left.
