TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS
SEPTEMBER 20, 2005
The Tennessee Valley Woodworkers monthly meeting was called to order by president Loyd Ackerman on Tuesday September 20, 2005 at 7:00 pm at the Nazarene Church building in Decherd, TN. There were 55 people in attendance, including visitors.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
The club president, Loyd Ackerman, opened the meeting by welcoming all members and guests.
He passed around the sign-up sheet for the grand door prize for all members to sign. The grand door prizes this year will be two $150 gift certificates from Woodcraft. They will be given away at the Christmas party/Twenty Year Anniversary Celebration on December 9. The Party/Celebration will be held at the Tullahoma American Legion and the cost is $15 each, with a choice of steak or chicken as an entrée.
Loyd announced that club members will receive a 10% discount off advertised prices from Woodline and Woodline would pay taxes on items bought directly at the LaVergne location.
Doyle McConnell discussed the shop tours that were held on September 10th in the Franklin County area. He expressed the club’s appreciation to Ken Gould for hosting this activity. The tour included the shops of Ken Gould, Tom Cowan, Daniel Maher and Ray Cole. This event was attended by about 20 people.
Club
members will be involved in conducting workshops at the International
Association of Recreation Leadership Conference in Monteagle on October 19-23.
A
letter was received, by the club, from the Franklin County Library expressing
their appreciation to the club for the construction of the cabinet sections.
The next club meeting will be at our regular meeting location, the Duck River Building in Winchester.
OLD BUSINESS:
Fall Seminar: Matt Brothers encouraged everyone to attend the Fall Seminar on furniture making. The seminar is set for October 8th at the Forrest Mills church activity building, with Andy Ray as the presenter. The event is scheduled to start at 8:00am and finish around 4:00 pm. The cost will be $40 if you prepay by October 4. The cost at the door will be $45.
Coffee County Fair: The Coffee County Fair will be September 19-24. Doyle announced the proposed activities and times for the Fair activities. He encouraged everyone to bring items for the display and come out and have fun. The carvers will meet at the fair on Thursday night and the Splinter Pickers will perform on Friday evening at 6:00 pm.
Dogwood Festival: The Winchester Festival will be held April 7-9, 2006. Ken Gould will have more detailed information as the date approaches.
NEW BUSINESS:
The nominating committee
was requested to recommend a slate of club officers for 2006 at the next
meeting. The nominating committee for this year is Henry Davis (chairman), Matt
Brothers and Chuck Taylor.
SHOW AND TELL:
Henry Davis displayed a
small table made from cherry and maple. The pattern was from Shop Smith
magazine. He showed a video presentation of the process of building the table.
He also brought and explained a sacrificial fence made for his table saw.
Bob Lowrance brought his
detailed carving of a group of baseball players.
David Whyte displayed two
“band saw” boxes he made from walnut and poplar.
Doyle McConnell brought a
vase made from red maple and finished with lacquer.
Ross Roepke brought five
boxes, of different styles, he made. Most had veneer top inserts. He also had a
breadboard made from maple and walnut.
Mary Helen Lindsay displayed
a white pine carving of a Loon waterfowl with a painted finish.
Maurice Ryan brought a
memory box with a veneer insert top. The maple veneer was from Doyle’s shop and
vacuum glued at Loyd’s shop. He also brought a small octagonal box, made from
cedar.
Louis Bryant brought a
box elder bowl that he had roughed at the last turning bee.
Bob Leonard brought lots
of wooden patterns to be given away.
Jack Rowe brought pieces
of polyethylene that can be used for shop fixtures, to give away.
PROGRAM:
The program was presented by Dr. Scott Torreano, professor at the University of the South in Sewanee. The general topic was “old growth wood”. Dr. Torreano discussed the physical properties of wood, including the strength of wood and the drying process. He showed a series of slides to help explain general wood properties.
He had an excellent presentation concerning the “reclaiming” of old wood. Examples of “reclaiming” were logs buried under water and wood from old barns. He gave examples of how expensive the “old wood” was to the users. He passed around many samples of the “reclaimed” wood and discussed the many current uses for the extremely expensive wood.
Refreshments were provided by Larry Bowers. The club also shared a birthday cake, observing the 20th anniversary of the club founders meeting on September 25, 1985.
