TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS

The Tennessee Valley Woodworkers monthly meeting was called to order by president Loyd Ackerman on Tuesday August 16, 2005 at 7:00 pm at the Duck River Building, Winchester, TN.

There were 58 people in attendance, including visitors.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The club president, Loyd Ackerman, opened the meeting by welcoming all members and guests.

He also reminded the club members that the grand door prizes this year will be two $150 gift certificates from Woodcraft and will be given away at the Christmas party/Twenty Year Anniversary Celebration on December 9th, beginning at 5:30 pm. The Party/Celebration will be held at the Tullahoma American Legion and the cost is $15 each, with a choice of steak or chicken as an entrée.

Doyle McConnell discussed the next set of shop tours, which will be in the Franklin County area, and Ken Gould will host. The date for the tours is September 10th and will begin at Shoney’s in Winchester at 7:00 am. The tour will include the shops of Ken Gould, Tom Cowan, and Ray Cole. Other shops may be added to the list.

The September meeting will be held at the Decherd Nazarene Church on 501 Cumberland Avenue in Decherd (location of our Christmas party last year). This relocation is necessary due to the projected renovation of the Duck River building.

Ross Roepke announced he had a lot of short poplar boards to give away. He also would like to sell a small metal lathe and is taking bids.

Maurice Ryan discussed his visit the Artist Center in Berea, Kentucky. He brought a brochure describing the activities of the Center.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Fall Seminar: Matt Brothers reminded everyone of the fall Seminar on furniture making. The seminar is set for October 8th at the Forrest Mills church activity building, with Andy Ray as the presenter. The event is scheduled to start at 8:00am and finish around 4:00 pm. The cost will be $40 if you prepay by October 4. The cost at the door will be $45. A sign-up sheet was passed for those interested in attending to sign, so that the club would have an idea of the expected participation.

Coffee County Fair: The Coffee County Fair will be September 19-24. The Splinter Pickers will perform on Friday evening at 6:00 pm. Doyle gave the proposed agenda for the Fair activities. He encouraged everyone to come out and have fun.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Dogwood Festival: The Winchester Festival will be held in April of 2006. The Festival committee wanted to know if the club was interested in participating again next year. The club voted to be included for the coming year. Ken Gould will pass the information to the Festival committee.

Club Raffle: The drawing for the Delta bench top drill was held at this meeting. The winner of the drill press was Henry Davis.

Club Drawing: The drawing for the 8-inch Dado blade, donated by David Whyte, was won by Bill Duncan.

 

SHOW AND TELL:

Geoff Roehm brought and discussed scrapers that he uses in crafting his musical instruments. He also demonstrated his burnishing techniques, utilizing a homemade tool. Geoff displayed a dulcimer with a western cedar top and book-matched walnut back.

Maurice Ryan brought a small cherry bowl that he had roughed at the turning bee.

Bob Lowrance had been to the J.C. Campbell School and just finished a very detailed Indian carving.

Tom McGill displayed a butternut bowl, turned on the end grain and had used Chromatic acid to color the wood.

Dick Wollam displayed a beautiful western cedar carving of an owl.

Harry May brought and discussed a basswood relief carving that he had completed during the carver’s classes. He also showed a hand carved handle on a cane.

Fred Heltsley brought a 24-inch high pepper mill.

Chuck Taylor brought his first completed hollow vessel made from red maple and a small turned box made from holly.

Wess Rittenhouse displayed a bulldozer made from oak and walnut. He modeled the dozier after a John Deere 650.

Tom Gillard gave an updated slide presentation of a wind tunnel section that he is building in his shop, with the components in various stages of construction.

Doyle McConnell presented a slide show of one of his current projects. He made rails and footboard for an antique bed from a large slab of old poplar. He also had slides of an antique sugar press repair and a slide of his new guard and dust collector for his table saw. The guard is mounted from the ceiling.

 

PROGRAM:

The program was presented by Henry Davis. Henry showed a video presentation concerning the sharpening and use of scrapers. The video showed the detailed steps in the sharpening process of scrapers and the proper use of scrapers. He passed around samples of scrapers.

Henry stressed that the techniques he demonstrated were ones that worked for him and not the only way to sharpen scrapers.

At the conclusion of the video presentation, Henry fielded a question and answer session concerning uses and sharpening techniques of various scraper shapes.

 

Refreshments were provided by the Karen Kerce and Bob Leonard.
