TVWW Minutes - April 20, 1999

 

The meeting called to order by President Loyd Ackerman.

 

Welcomed guests were Bob Jernigan, Andy Weaver, Dean Lutes, Matt Brothers, Jack Baggenstoss, Clinton Davis, Larry Halbeck and Tim Halbeck.

 

Announcements - Henry Davis’s work is in progress.  Bob Reese’s sharpening workshop will be a one on one session at Bob’s workshop on June 12, 1999.  A sign up sheet was available and will be at the May meeting.  Ross Roepke has written a compressive paper on planning a workshop layout.  If you would like a copy, send Ross a SASE.  Expo 2000 is less than 10 months away.  Fall seminar - Tom Cowan has had preliminary contact with John Quick a Windsor chair maker.  This would be a lecture and demonstration using traditional tools and methods. The club indicated by a show of hands that it would support this seminar.  The club picnic will be held June 5, 1999, at the Belvidere Community center.  Bar-B-Que will be provided by the club.  Phil Bishop agreed to be drink chairman.  Each family will provide a side dish or dessert.   Tom Church is planning a day of turning one Saturday in May at the Belvidere Market. 

 

Old business - none

 

New business - Harry May reported that there will be a wood carving seminar in Crossville.  The fee of $185 includes lodging and some meals.  The seminar will be held on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  For complete details, contact Harry.

 

Show and Tell - Jim Van Cleave presented his initial attempt at relief carving.  Doyle McConnell brought a large walnut natural edge bowl.  Don Helton had a scroll-sawn letterbox out of oak. Don also had a tip to prevent burning wood with the scroll saw by putting packing tape on the cut line.  Crocia Roberson - a rocking chair puzzle from the early 1900’s.  Crocia mixed equal parts of vinegar, boiled linseed oil and turpentine to restore the wood.  Gary Runyon - a cherry tape loom that he made for his wife.  Russ Willis - Pictures of a spiral staircase.

 

After a short recess, Dr. Robert Kohler presented a program on his hobby of making wooden toys.
